Bakersfield, California firefighters are encouraging healthier lifestyle choices among women by providing much needed information and holding a special bingo event to raise awareness of the number one killer among women, heart-disease.

The event is being hosted cooperatively between the Bakersfield Fire Department and Dignity Health organizations.  Dubbed the Red Hot Bingo Event, the two groups will be encouraging women to get heart scans during “American Heart Month” this February.

An event designed specifically with women in mind, the night’s festivities will include bingo games, shopping, food and cocktails served by nine of the Bakersfield’s “hottest firefighters”.

Battalion Chief Anthony Galagaza stresses that not enough women are aware of the dangers of heart disease. Regular physicals and cholesterol checks are necessary to maintain a healthy and able lifestyle among the city’s female population. Galagaza fears that most women are unaware of what their cholesterol and blood pressure numbers should be. With any luck, this event will play host to an evening full of fun with a bit of education thrown into the mix.

The event is free to enter, but donations are encouraged, as they will help to cover the costs of heart screenings for women who otherwise would not be able to afford such services.

The Red Hot event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m., 12th February at Metro Galleries, 1604 19th St.  in Bakersfield California.
