A staple among UK, EU and North American communities, bingo is a game that is seen as a charitable and entertaining event that players of any age can enjoy. Now that a recent report has revealed a drop in 50% revenue among operators, the government of Prince Edward Island is working to bolster the industry.

All bingos in the province are operated by non-profits. As a result sagging numbers, officials plan to inject $140,000 into the industry as they breathe new life into the game.

Manager of the Charlottetown Sherwood Lions Bingo, Steve MacDonald says it has been harder and harder for operators to attract young people. The consultant’s report suggests that the Island population is experiencing a natural erosion of its demographic, a trend being observed throughout the country. While a ban on smoking in bingo halls and increased video terminal activity have also caused venues to take a hit.

The consultant’s report calls for the introduction of new promotions, new games and spending an estimated $100,000 on advertising to give bingo the kick it needs on PEI.
