Argentina vs. Belgium

FIFA World Cup / 05 July 2014, 16:00

Argentina and Belgium will be competing for a place in the World Cup semi-finals when they play on Saturday, 5th July.

These teams haven’t played in almost two decades. They last met in June 1986 when Argentina won 2-0. Belgium last beat Argentina in 1982 but obviously the teams have completely changed since then.

Argentina has not yet truly impressed in this tournament. In all of their matches it has primarily been Captain Lionel Messi that has secured their victories. However, there is speculation that the rest of the team does not supply him with enough support, especially following the Round of 16 game with Switzerland. Furthermore, the Swiss managed to truly challenge the Argentinian defence and Belgium is sure to do the same.

Belgium also had a close call in its Round of 16 match against the USA. However, the team managed to just hold on to come out on top. Belgium attacked well throughout the match and the US defence did well to hold them off. In the end though, Belgium looked to be the stronger side and their victory was deserved.

It is essential that Argentina’s other star players start performing well in this quarter-final. Players such as Ezequiel Lavezzi, Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain and Angel di Maria have almost appeared to be absent at times.

On the other hand, Belgium will also need to put step up its game. Coach Marc Wilmots has been extremely clever with his substitutions so far in the tournament and he will need to hope that this tactic works against Argentina.

Once again, it looks like the game is like to go all the way and penalties would not be that surprising.
