Brazil vs. Netherlands

FIFA World Cup / 12 July 2014, 20:00

Brazil and the Netherlands will face each other in the play-off for third place at the Estadio Nacional on Saturday, 12th July.

Brazil will be coming to this game desperate to restore some dignity and pride after being  humiliated by a 7 – 1 defeat to Germany in the semi-finals. The Netherlands will be just as determined, but will not have suffered from the same knock to their confidence after an extremely close semi-final.

The teams last played in June 2011 in a friendly which ended in a 0-0 draw. The year before the Netherlands beat Brazil 2-1 in the World Cup.  Overall, each side has won 3 games against each other and they have had 5 draws.

Brazil is sure to come out all guns blazing, and while they are still going to be missing Neymar, Thiago Silva will be returning and that is sure to boost the team’s confidence. Nonetheless, the team will have to make some major changes if they are to have a chance of getting past the Dutch defence which has Ron Vlaar sitting at the back.

On the other hand, the Netherlands have been having problems upfront. While they were extremely heavy scorers in the Group Stage, beginning with a 5 – 1 defeat of Spain, the team has not scored a goal in the last 240 minutes of play and in the match before that it was 87 minutes before they found the back of the net.

It is easy to find weaknesses in both teams, but both have proved themselves this tournament as resilient sides that won’t give up until the final whistle and that is what could make this such an exciting wide-open match.
