David Ferrer vs. Leonardo Mayer

ATP World Tour / 20 July 2014, 13:00

Top seed David Ferrer will face Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer at the bet-at-home Open final in Hamburg on Sunday, 20 July.

Ferrer reached the final by seeing off German teenager Alexander Zverev 6-0, 6-1 in 56 minutes in the semi-final. Leonardo Mayer has reached his first ATP World Tour 500 final by defeating seventh-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-5, 6-4 in his semi-final.

The two players have met once before, two years ago at the Topshelf Open where Ferrer won 6-3,6-1. However, Mayer hasn’t dropped a set in five matches on the way to the final and is looking better than this statistic would suggest.

Mayer is currently at a career-high No. 46 in the ATP Rankings having been boosted by reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon last month. He will now be hoping to win his first ATP World Tour title after finishing runner-up in his first final on clay in Vina del Mar in February.

Ferrer is currently No. 7 in the ATP Rankings and chasing his 22nd ATP title. This year he has already won in Buenos Aires but his most successful year was 2012 when he won seven different titles. In recent months he reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros before being beaten by Rafael Nadal and he also made it to the semi-finals at the Madrid Open before losing to Kei Nishikori.

Mayer is five years younger than Ferrer and will be desperate to win the first singles title of his career. However, while Ferrer might be heading into the twilight years of his career, he is still playing extremely well and will be determined to take his second title of the year.
