Germany vs. Argentina

FIFA World Cup / 13 July 2014, 19:00

Germany and Argentina will battle it out at the Estadio do Maracana in the 2014 World Cup final on Sunday, 13th July.

From the start many have favoured Germany to win and they justified this by first winning the “group of death” and then destroying the host nation Brazil 7 – 1 in a thrilling semi-final. While Argentina has not dominated a game in the same way as the Germans, the team keeps winning and more than deserves its place in the final.

This is actually the third time that these teams will meet in a World Cup final. Argentina won in 1986 while Germany won in 1990. More recently they met in August 2012 when Germany lost to Argentina 3 – 1, before that they played in July 2010 when Germany won 4 – 0.

The Germans are sure to focus on suppressing Messi; left unattended he turns into a goal scoring force. The Netherlands successfully held him at bay in the semi-finals and Germany is sure to follow the same tactic.

Argentina will also be relying on goalkeeper Sergio Romero. After Germany’s seven-goal slaughter of Brazil there is no doubt that Romero will have to keep his wits about him.  At the same time the Argentinian defence is excellent and unlikely to give Germany the same opportunities that Brazil did.

Once again this match has the potential to come down to penalties, and while this may be frustrating for some fans, it is perhaps the most fitting ending to what has been one of the best World Cups of all time.
