Novak Djokovic vs. Roger Federer

WTA World Tour / 06 July 2014, 13:00

Novak Djokovic will play Roger Federer for the championship title in the final at Wimbledon on Sunday, 6 July.

Djokovic reached the final after an impressive, but hard fought, semi-final against Grigor Dimitrov winning 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (9-7). Federer had a slightly easier path to the final beating Milos Raonic in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

If Djokovic wins then he will move back to No. 1 in the rankings and it would be his first Grand Slam title of the year. Djokobic has won at least one Grand Slam per year over the last three years and has won a total of six titles.

A win for Federer would give him his eighth title and make him the most successful player in the tournament’s history. This is his ninth final at Wimbledon and at 32 years-old he is the oldest Grand Slam finalist since Andre Agassi in the 2005 US Open.

Federer hasn’t won a title since the 2012 Wimbledon tournament, and while he is the game’s most decorated player he has started to fall behind the world’s elite in recent years. However, his performance at Wimbledon this year has been astounding and he has demonstrated that he is still very much capable of winning major titles.

Overall Federer is 18 – 16 against Djokovic, he won the last time that the two met in a Grand Slam, the 2012 Wimbledon semi-finals. However, Djokovic is 6-4 against Federer in recent years and since 2011 he has won five Grand Slam titles. Federer is in the twilight of his career, but Djokovic is very much in his prime.

Without a doubt this has the potential to be one of the most hard-fought, high quality tennis matches of recent times.
