Competitive sports are full of ups and downs, and the world of boxing is no different. This week saw its own celebrations and upsets, most notably in Curtis Woodhouse’s British title win and subsequent announcement of his retirement from the sport.

A former professional football player, Woodhouse stepped into the ring as a light-welterweight. The 33-year old used to play professionally as a mid-fielder, but until recently had been playing for himself as a professional boxer. Woodhouse’s decision to changes sports came after he admitted to have “fallen out of love” with football. He would go on to profess that boxing had always been his first love, even as a child, and reportedly participated in as many as 100 street fights over the years.

The former footballer began his boxing career in 2006 and always wanted to withdraw from sports as a champion. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to do so.

Former champion Darren Hamilton was bested by Woodhouse late last week. The match finished in a split decision where Woodhouse would be named victor, eventually ending his career with a record of 22-6-0.

Rumors spread that Woodhouse had placed a wager of £5,000 on himself to win at 50-1 odds. The fighter had no answer for parties when questioned about the wager, but said celebratory drinks would be on him.

Woodhouse now busies himself as a football manager.
