Eager to suit up with the French League 1 Champions Paris Saint Germain, Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye reportedly pleaded with his English club to make the switch during the current transfer window.

Newcastle agreed and not more than a day later the transfer was underway for a fee rumored to be as high as £23 million. Cabaye’s chief reason for seeking the transfer is his desire to compete in the Champions League, a prospect which Newcastle’s Alan Pardew admittedly did not see happening.

Paris Saint Germain had made an offer of £14 million for Cabaye last Sunday, but the sum was quickly rejected by Newcastle management. Cabaye began his tenure with Newcastle in 2011 starting with a £4.5 million contract.

PSG head Al-Khelaifi told French publication L’Equipe,

We decided to target Cabaye for three reasons. One, he is a very good player, very interesting to us. Two, I have never met him but I was told he is a nice guy. Three, he is French and it is very important for us to recruit French players at PSG in order to win the French championship.”

In his last 20 appearances, Cabaye has found the back of the net seven times and his presence on the field will not go overlooked after the transfer is completed.
When asked about how it will affect the squad, Newcastle chief Pardew had this to say, “We’d need to bring someone in for sure. You can’t lose a player of that quality and not replace him.”
