The 28-year-old Man U striker Wayne Rooney has extended his contract to play with the club for an additional four years, making him 33 by the time the contract is up. The forward will reportedly make as much as £300,000 per week for the duration and earn the designation of Club Ambassador when he decides to retire.

In 2004 he moved from Everton to play with the squad and has enjoyed incredible success on an international stage as one of the sports leading stars. Rooney is currently only 42 goals from surpassing Sir Bobby Charlton’s United record of 249 goals.

After 430 games Rooney has amassed 208 goals for the English team. The prospect of overtaking Sir Charlton’s previous record is one of great excitement for players and management alike.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had previously reported Rooney sought a transfer, but the player had denied such claims when questioned. Chelsea has had several bids for Rooney’s contract rejected and it appears United will have him for the duration of his career.

Next season will be the first of Rooney’s to sit out the Champions League since leaving Goodison Park a decade ago. Currently, United are 11 points from the top four, although qualification is still in reach following a win in this season’s tournament.
