Powerful Cameroon Readies for World Cup Battles

📅21 May 2014, 08:50

This year will be Cameroon’s 7th appearance at the World Cup. The team has reached the group stage on five occasions and only once, in 1990, managed to progress as far as the quarter-finals. Cameroon has been most successful in the Africa Cup of Nations, winning it four times and will be trying to reproduce this success in Brazil this summer.

Style

Coach Vooker Finke plays the team in 4-2-3-1 formation. The team tries to dominate the field using size and speed to bulldoze opponents. The midfield is happy to battle other players while the front line does a huge amount of running about the pitch. Finke tends to make use of technically-talented players but tries to put team performance ahead of individuals.

Strengths

Cameroon is an extremely physical fit and dominant side which consistently works hard. The team has a very strong defence and didn’t drop any points in qualifying. The team also managed to keep a clean sheet in over half of the matches. Furthermore, they proved good at scoring from a distance with 22% of goals coming from outside the box.

Weaknesses

The team is let down by its attack. None of the players have any real attacking ingenuity and failed to score during a third of qualifying games. Set pieces seem to be hard for the team to deal with and corners accounted for half of the goals conceded. The team also struggled to defend against headers.
