The opening World Cup Group E games brought some mixed results with some truly excellent football last Sunday. While France dominated in their game against the Honduras, Switzerland only just stole victory from Ecuador thanks to a fantastic end-to-end counter attack from Haris Seferovic.
Ecuador took an early lead in the match thanks to a header from Enner Valencia. However, just three minutes into the second half Switzerland equalised with a header of its own. For most of the second half the game looked destined to end with a draw but in the final minute of extra time Switzerland managed an extra goal to claim all three points.
France looked extremely strong in their 3-0 win over Honduras. Karim Benzema rose to the occasion to score two goals and play a major role in the third. The win was France’s first in the tournament for 16 years and is sure to leave them feeling more confident as their game with Switzerland approaches.
France and Switzerland play each other on Friday and it will probably be the most exciting match in this group. Both teams are now positioned to progress to the next round and a win for either side will almost certainly secure qualification.
Ecuador will be desperate for victory in their match against Honduras. While there is still hope for both teams to qualify, the loosing team will have severely damaged their chances.
