Group F Opens with a Goalless Draw and Lack of Flare

The opening Group F games of the World Cup were in some ways the dullest to take place so far. However, there were a few outstanding moments, and more importantly the group is in some ways wide open.

Many people were surprised by how hard Argentina had to work for a win against Bosnia-Herzegovina. There was a goal just three minutes in from Marcos Rojo flicked off a free kick from Messi, however, this failed to open the scoring frenzy that some had predicted. The Bosnians impressed with their hard work and proved to be extremely resilient. Messi returned to form and scored a brilliant goal in the second half however, Bosnia’s Ibisevic managed to get past the Argentinian defence in the 84th minute to score the team’s only goal.

Iran and Nigeria’s 0-0 draw was the first draw of the tournament. The result was partly due to Iran’s defensive discipline and partly down to Nigeria’s inability to convert possession into goals. While Iran’s defence was impressive, both team’s urgently need to start scoring if they wish to progress.

Nigeria face Bosnia on Saturday and many are predicting it will be a showdown for second place in the group. Both teams will face a real challenge in the battle for the all-important 3 points. Iran is up against group favourite Argentina and will have to work far harder in order to escape with any points at all.
