Day 7 of the World Cup saw Groups A and B complete their second round of matches and brought with it the biggest shock of the tournament. Defending champions Spain are out of the competition and will be heading home after their final group game next week.

Chile never stopped attacking and showed absolute determination to win their match. First half goals from Eduardo Vargas and Charles Aranguiz secured their victory and brought Spain’s dominance of international football to an end. The Spaniards will now head home with their tails between their legs while Chile will be feeling confident going into the next round.

In the same group the Netherlands just managed to beat Australia 3-2 to send the Aussies out of the competition. The Netherlands fought back from 2-1 behind with goals from Robin van Persie and Memphis Depay.  Having destroyed Spain last week and pulled off an impressive comeback yesterday, the Netherlands are looking increasingly strong and are certainly a force to be reckoned with.

The second Group A game saw Croatia beat Cameroon 4-0. The result means that Cameroon will be going home after next week’s match with Brazil. At the moment Brazil and Mexico are tied on 4 points while Croatia is just behind on 3. This makes next week’s match between Croatia and Mexico absolutely vital as only the winner will progress to the next round. At the same time, while Brazil’s place in the next round is guaranteed, the host nation will be eager to put on a good display against Cameroon after two fairly disappointing matches.
