Thursday night saw England lose 2 – 1 to Uruguay thanks to two goals from Luis Suarez. Wayne Rooney gave the team some hope with his first ever World Cup goal, but Suarez secured Uruguay’s victory with a goal just six minutes from the end of the match.

The result left England needing Italy to win its two remaining matches. However, Costa Rica shocked the Italian team on Friday night to win 1-0 and send England home after just two games. Costa Rica is now sure to progress and Italy and Uruguay will battle it out for second place in the group when they play on Tuesday.

Group C saw Colombia beat the Ivory Coast 2-1 and secure their progression to the next round. Japan and Greece drew 0-0 in their match which means that the battle for second place is still open. If the Ivory Coast beat Greece next week then they will progress, however all of the teams have the potential to claim the second spot and it could even come down to goal difference.

Friday saw France destroy Switzerland and win 5 – 2 to send them straight to the top of Group E. Honduras lost its game to Ecuador 2 – 1 which leaves them at the bottom of the group with 0 points and out of the competition. In the battle for second place, Ecuador needs to win its match against France and for Honduras to beat Switzerland next week if they are going to progress. However, if Switzerland wins and Ecuador loses then Ecuador will be heading home.
