A late goal from Portugal kept them in the World Cup yesterday as their game with the USA ended in a dramatic draw while an excellent performance from Algeria has left Group H wide open.

Portugal took an early lead in their game but the USA levelled with an excellent strike from Jermaine Jones’ just after an hour. In the 81st minute Dempsey scored to put the USA in the lead and at that point it looked as if it was all over for Portugal. However, in the 94th minute the USA’s defence relaxed and gave Varela the chance to sink a cross from Ronaldo into the net.

The result means that a draw between Germany and the USA will see them both progress next week. However, if Germany wins then a win from either Portugal or Ghana could see them through to the next round.

In Group H a late goal from Belgium secured their spot at the top of the table and a strong performance from Algeria against Russia gave them a much needed 3 points. As things stand at the moment Belgium are certain to progress but the battle for second place is wide open. When Russia and Algeria play each other later in the week, a win from either side could send them through. At the same time it is not impossible for the Korean Republic to make it through if the team beats Belgium on Thursday night.
