Once again the Round of 16 games were full of drama. Both games looked to be heading towards penalties which were only avoided thanks to some last minute goals.

France scored twice in the final 11 minutes of its match to beat Nigeria and reach the quarter-finals. The first goal was from Paul Pogba in the 79th minute and then Joseph Yobo diverted Mathieu Valbuena’s cross into the net in the final minute of the match.

The final score is a bit harsh on Nigeria who dominated for much of the second half. However, its players began to tire and mistakes crept in so it will have to wait at least another four years for its first quarter-final appearance at a World Cup. France on the other hand has reached at least the semi-finals on the last five occasions they have progressed past the Group Stage.

The evening’s second game, Germany against Algeria, was goalless after 90 minutes. Throughout the match Germany lacked urgency and were frequently challenged by an enterprising Algeria. Eventually Adnre Schurrle finished from close range just two minutes into extra time to give Germany the lead. This was followed by a goal from Mesut Ozil to double the lead. Abdelmoumene Djabou managed to score in the final minute of the match which led to a frantic end, but in the end Germany held on to win 2-1.

The result means that France and Germany will now play in what is sure to be a thrilling quarter-final this coming Friday.
