The Wold Cup quarter-finals thrilled viewers over the weekend. All four games were packed with drama and high quality play as the teams fought to claim a spot in the semi-finals.

Friday evening began with Germany against France. Germany had struggled a bit in earlier rounds, but they took an early lead from Mats Hummels’ header and were comfortable victors over a disappointing France. France never really seemed to get going, Germany dominated the midfield and dictated the pace throughout the game.

Next up was Brazil against Colombia. Brazil’s Captain Thiago Silva opened scoring early in the seventh minute. Not long into the second half David Luiz helped secure Brazil’s passage to the semis with a fantastic free kick. Colombia’s star James Rodriguez set up a gripping finally after scoring from the penalty spot with ten minutes left. However, Brazil managed to hold on and will now face Germany in Belo Horizonte on Tuesday.

Saturday’s action began with Argentina playing Belgium. Gonzalo Higuain scored the only goal, a fantastic strike just eight minutes in to send Argentina through. Belgium fought back hard but seemed to lack cohesion throughout the game. Once again Messi put in a fantastic performance to keep the Belgians at bay and ensure his team reaches their first semi-final since 1990.

The last quarter-final saw the Netherlands play Costa Rica. After extra-time the score was still 0-0 despite some good efforts from both teams. Just before the end of extra-time the Dutch goalkeeper Tim Krul was brought off the bench for the penalty shootout. Krul made two essential saves and goals from Van Persie, Robben, Sneijder, and Kuyt saw the Netherlands win 4-3 and bring Costa Rica’s fantastic run to an end. The Netherlands will now face Argentina on Wednesday evening in the semi-finals.
