European football fans have enjoyed an action packed week with nearly all the major leagues finally in action.

In what is perhaps an ominous result, the Premier League saw Liverpool defeated 3 – 1 by Manchester. However, the biggest news from English football this week is the continuing failure by Manchester United to win a game. First they were held to a 1 – 1 draw by Sunderland and then later this week they were knocked out of the Capital One Cup by MK Dons in a 4 – 0 thrashing.

In Spain Barcelona got off to a good start with a 3 – 0 victory over Elche while Real Madrid enjoyed a 2 – 0 victory over Cordoba. Furthermore, Gareth Bale has said that his team (Real Madrid) intends to do their best to become the first team to defend their Champions League title.

The Bundesliga saw Bayern Munich enjoy victory over Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim beat FC Augsburg 2 – 0.  In other news Bayern Munich has reached an agreement with Roma to sign centre-back Mehdi Benatia.

Ligue 1 also enjoyed a week of action with victories for Marseille, Bordeaux and Montpellier.

The weekend sees the start of the Serie A in Italy with Chievo and Juventus playing on Saturday followed by Roma and Fiorentina.
