Yesterday saw the final round of Group A and B matches take place, and while progression from Group B had already been decided, there was everything to play for in Group A.

The first matches of the day saw the Netherlands play Chile for the top spot in Group B while Spain had the chance to restore some honour in their game against Australia. Holland beat Chile 2 – 0 which means they are progressing having won all three of their matches. Louis van Gaal helped his team to subdue the previously exuberant Chile with a great performance both on and off the pitch. In the other match Spain managed to see of Australia 3 – 0 so the team can at least return home having won one game and got some points on the table.

In Group A Brazil put in a persuasive performance to beat Cameroon 4 – 1. The most impressive performance came from Neymar who was responsible for two of his team’s goals. However, there were still flaws in Brazil’s performance which will be seriously tested in their next round match. In the second game Mexico secured progression by beating Croatia 3 – 1. The game started slowly and Mexico seemed to be playing for a draw, however, the pace picked up in the second half and soon Mexico had a 3 goal lead, Croatia did manage to claw one back but it wasn’t enough to keep them in the competition.

These results mean that Brazil will face Chile in the first Round of 16 match on Saturday while the Netherlands will play Mexico on Sunday. Saturday’s game is likely to be a tough test for the host nation while many think that the Netherlands look unstoppable at this stage.
